Catalina Island Weekend – Day 1
Phill wanted to go to Catalina Island, but we had a busy summer and never made it. So he booked us a hotel for after Thanksgiving, and we were lucky that it happened to be unseasonably warm and actually the perfect time to go.
So we drove down to Long Beach to the Catalina Express and boarded the boat that would take us over to the island.
It has been over ten years since I last went to the island, and I’ve never stayed overnight there, so I was looking forward to seeing what’s changed.
The boat ride is just over an hour, and dolphin sightings (and a shark sighting) kept us entertained.
We arrived around 3 and were greeted with this view.
First thing we did was go to our hotel to drop off our bags. The hotel was actually a block away from everything, for better and worse.
Our room was basic, with a really awkward shower, but not bad for how cheap it was.
We went to the roof to check out the views of Avalon we had.
Not too bad.
From there we walked around the town and then headed over to the casino.
The sun was already starting to set!
I’d never been over to the casino before, and the building is quite impressive.
We made use of the view of the harbor and took some pictures before heading back to town to eat.
We hit up The Lobster Trap for our pre-dinner snack and drinks.
Phill was happy to have a drink.
The ceviche was okay, not the best.
You can’t go wrong with coconut shrimp and theirs was really good. After all that walking we went back to the hotel for a little rest before dinner-dinner. We went a little later in the evening, when it was a bit colder, but still managed to get a table (albeit one outside) right away at the Bluewater Grill.
I ordered the island’s popular drink: Buffalo Milk which is like a white Russian.
I had the mani mani which was really fresh.
Phill had a big bowl of mussels and shrimp and scallops.
And we split the key lime pie for dessert. After dinner we opted to skip the bar scene and went back to the hotel to rest up for our full day on the island tomorrow.
